"You see," he said quietly, "those branches don't just exist now. They remember summer. They anticipate spring. The tree is its whole history and its whole future, all gathered here." Lowe said it was impossible not to see the trees differently afterward.
Whitehead isn't simply anti-science mystic rejecting materialism — he was rigorous mathematician and physicist who wanted metaphysics adequate to twentieth-century science (quantum mechanics, relativity, biology), not nineteenth-century mechanism. He opposed mechanistic reduction, not scientific inquiry. He didn't believe literally that atoms "feel" — his panexperientialism is more subtle: even basic actual occasions have subjectivity (prehension) but not consciousness or emotion as we know it. Experience and sentience are different; experience goes all the way down, complex consciousness emerges only in higher organisms. Whitehead’s central insight: reality is fundamentally process, not substance. The universe is not made of enduring things that occasionally change — it’s made of events arising and perishing. What we call “things” (rocks, trees, persons) are actually societies of occasions, patterns of becoming rather than static entities.
His basic unit is the “actual occasion” — a drop of experience that comes into being, integrates its world, achieves satisfaction, and perishes. Every actual occasion prehends (grasps, feels) its past and environment, weaves these elements together through concrescence (growing together), creates something new, then becomes data for future occasions. This happens everywhere: in atoms, cells, organisms, consciousness.
