Science advances not by proving theories true but by trying to prove them false — a theory is scientific only if it's falsifiable, and open societies
Karl Raimund Popper was born on 28 July 1902 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, into a prosperous, cultured Jewish family. His father, Simon Siegmund Carl Popper, was a successful lawyer with a magnificent library of 10,000 volumes. His mother, Jenny Schiff, was from a wealthy family. The household was assimilated — the family had converted to Lutheranism before Karl’s birth but practiced no religion. Karl grew up in a home filled with books, music (his father played piano), and intellectual discussion. Vienna was cultural capital: Freud, Mahler, Wittgenstein, the Vienna Circle, Adolf Loos, Otto Neurath were creating modernism. Karl absorbed it all.
He attended the Realschule but hated the authoritarian teaching methods. At sixteen, without graduating, he left school and enrolled as a guest student at the University of Vienna (1918), studying mathematics, physics, philosophy, psychology, and music. He worked as apprentice cabinetmaker to support himself — Popper treasured this experience, valuing manual skill and craftsmanship lifelong.
Vienna after WWI was chaotic: the Empire collapsed, revolution threatened, poverty spread. Popper, like many idealistic youth, flirted with Marxism. He joined socialist youth movements, attended Marxist study groups. But in 1919, a formative experience: a Communist demonstration he attended turned violent; police killed several demonstrators. Popper was horrified — Marxist leaders had recklessly endangered people’s lives for the revolution. He began questioning Marxism’s certainty, its willingness to sacrifice individuals for historical inevitability. This seed grew into his later critique of historicism.
He also attended meetings of the Vienna Circle — the logical positivists (Moritz Schlick, Rudolf Carnap, Otto Neurath) who met to discuss philosophy of science, logic, and the elimination of metaphysics. But Popper was never a member. He disagreed fundamentally: they wanted to verify meaningful statements; he argued verification is impossible.
In 1922, he passed the Matura (high school examination) as external student. He studied at the Pedagogical Institute and qualified as teacher. In 1928, he received his PhD in philosophy with a dissertation on thinking in psychology (influenced by experimental psychology and Gestalt theory). He taught mathematics and science at secondary schools while developing his philosophy of science.
In 1930, he married Josefine Anna Henninger, called “Hennie.” She was a fellow teacher, intelligent, supportive. The marriage lasted until her death in 1985 — fifty-five years. They had no children but were devoted companions.
Through the early 1930s, Popper wrote his first book, initially titled Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie (The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge, published only posthumously). Distilling it, he produced Logik der Forschung (1934), translated as The Logic of Scientific Discovery. It proposed falsificationism: scientific theories can’t be verified (confirmed conclusively) but only falsified (shown wrong by counterexamples). A theory is scientific if it’s falsifiable — if it makes risky predictions that could be proven wrong. Theories that can’t be falsified (Marxism, psychoanalysis, astrology) aren’t scientific. Science progresses through bold conjectures and severe tests, not induction. The book was published in Vienna Circle’s series but rejected their verificationism.
By 1937, Austria was increasingly dangerous. Hitler’s Germany threatened Anschluss (annexation). Popper, though baptized Lutheran, had Jewish ancestry — he was in danger. He applied for academic positions abroad. With help from friends (including Ernst Gombrich), he secured a lectureship at Canterbury University College in Christchurch, New Zealand. In March 1937, he and Hennie emigrated. A month later, he wrote: “I think I have escaped from a madhouse.”
Austria was annexed (1938); Popper’s relatives fled or perished. He spent WWII in New Zealand — isolated, teaching, reading, writing. He produced his political masterwork: The Open Society and Its Enemies, written in Christchurch 1938-43. The book was his wartime contribution — while he couldn’t fight physically, he could fight intellectually against totalitarianism’s philosophical roots. He traced totalitarian ideology to Plato (the philosopher-king is a tyrant), Hegel (history is rational necessity justifying the state), and Marx (historicism predicts communist utopia, justifying revolutionary violence). Against these “enemies of the open society,” Popper defended piecemeal social engineering, critical rationalism, and liberal democracy. The open society is one where institutions allow criticism, change, and error-correction without violence. The closed society claims to know historical destiny and silences criticism.
The book was controversial. Popper sent the manuscript to publishers from New Zealand. It was rejected repeatedly (too long, too obscure, attacks on revered figures like Plato). Finally, Friedrich Hayek, the economist and philosopher Popper had corresponded with, helped get it published by Routledge (1945, two volumes). It made Popper famous — and made him enemies among Marxists, Hegelians, and classicists who saw his readings as oversimplified.
In 1946, Popper moved to London, appointed Reader in Logic and Scientific Method at the London School of Economics. He would remain there until retirement (1969), building the department and training generations of students (Imre Lakatos, Paul Feyerabend, John Watkins, Joseph Agassi). His seminar was legendary — fierce debates, no mercy for fuzzy thinking, students terrified and exhilarated.
On 25 October 1946, an infamous incident: Popper visited Cambridge to give a paper at the Moral Science Club, where Wittgenstein presided. The topic: “Are there philosophical problems?” Wittgenstein held that philosophical problems are linguistic confusions; Popper argued they’re real. During discussion, Wittgenstein gestured with a poker from the fireplace. Popper listed moral problems as examples. Wittgenstein allegedly said: “Give me an example of a moral rule.” Popper replied: “Not to threaten visiting lecturers with pokers.” Wittgenstein threw down the poker and left. (Accounts vary; both sides later claimed victory. A book, Wittgenstein’s Poker, examines the incident.)
Popper revised and expanded The Logic of Scientific Discovery, publishing the English edition in 1959. It became standard text in philosophy of science. He also developed critical rationalism more fully: reason itself is open to criticism; we justify beliefs not by foundations (empiricism, rationalism) but by criticism and error-elimination. There are no certain foundations; knowledge grows through trial and error — conjectures and refutations.
In The Poverty of Historicism (1957, based on wartime writings), he attacked the idea that history has laws enabling prediction of future developments. Historicism (found in Plato, Hegel, Marx, Comte) is pseudoscience and dangerous: it justifies sacrificing present generations for predicted future utopia. History is radically open because human knowledge grows, and we can’t predict what we’ll discover.
Popper defended scientific realism and objectivity. In “Epistemology Without a Knowing Subject” and Objective Knowledge (1972), he proposed three worlds: World 1 (physical objects), World 2 (subjective mental states), and World 3 (objective knowledge — theories, problems, arguments existing independently of anyone’s believing them). Mathematical proofs, scientific theories inhabit World 3. This objectivity isn’t absolute truth but truth-as-aim: we seek truth, criticize claims, improve approximations.
He was knighted in 1965, becoming Sir Karl Popper. He retired in 1969 but continued writing. His later works addressed quantum mechanics (he corresponded with Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg), evolutionary epistemology (knowledge evolves like organisms — variation, selection, retention), and political issues (defending liberal democracy, criticizing totalitarianism and relativism).
His relationship with former students became strained. Imre Lakatos and Paul Feyerabend, once devoted disciples, developed rival views. Feyerabend’s Against Method (1975) argued for epistemological anarchism — “anything goes” in science, no universal method. Popper saw this as relativism and betrayal. He became increasingly isolated, surrounded by fewer defenders as post-Kuhnian philosophy of science moved away from his rationalism.
Hennie died in 1985. Popper was devastated. He lived nine more years, continuing to work but lonely. He died on 17 September 1994 in London. His ashes were returned to Vienna and buried near his parents. Tributes poured in from scientists and philosophers worldwide. He had transformed philosophy of science and defended reason against dogmatism. His legacy: the fallibilist who insisted we progress through learning from mistakes.

Popper’s philosophy centers on fallibilism, critical rationalism, and the open society. Everything is interconnected: epistemology, science, politics.
The problem of induction: Hume showed induction — inferring universal laws from particular observations — can’t be logically justified. We observe that the sun has risen every day; we infer it will rise tomorrow. But this assumes nature is uniform, which is itself an inductive claim (circular). Logical positivists tried various solutions; Popper said: stop trying to justify induction. Science doesn’t work inductively.
Falsificationism: Science advances through conjectures and refutations. Scientists propose bold hypotheses (conjectures), derive testable predictions, attempt to refute them through observation and experiment. Theories that survive severe tests are corroborated (not verified — they might fail future tests). Theories that fail tests are falsified and should be abandoned or modified. The method is deductive: from hypothesis H and initial conditions C, we deduce prediction P. If P is false, H or C is false (modus tollens). We test predictions, not hypotheses directly, but failed predictions show something’s wrong.
Demarcation: What separates science from pseudoscience? Not verifiability (logical positivism) because: (1) universal statements can’t be verified (finite observations can’t confirm infinite instances), (2) many scientific theories use unobservable entities (electrons, fields). Popper’s criterion: falsifiability. A theory is scientific if it forbids certain observations — if it makes risky predictions that could be proven wrong. Einstein’s relativity predicts specific light deflection during eclipse; if not observed, theory is false. Astrology makes vague predictions compatible with any observation, so it’s unfalsifiable, hence unscientific.
Marxism and psychoanalysis: Popper argued both are pseudoscience. Early Marx made testable predictions (increasing immiseration of workers, revolution in advanced capitalist countries). These failed. But instead of abandoning theory, Marxists reinterpreted it to fit any outcome. Similarly, psychoanalysis explains anything: your dream means you desire your mother (Oedipus complex); you deny it? That’s repression proving the theory. Unfalsifiable theories aren’t refuted by evidence; they’re immunized against criticism.
Corroboration versus confirmation: Surviving tests corroborates a theory but doesn’t prove it true. Newton’s theory was magnificently corroborated for centuries, then falsified by observations explainable by relativity. We never know a theory is true; we only know it’s survived tests so far. Science seeks true theories but accepts we might never know we’ve found them. This is fallibilism: all knowledge is provisional, open to revision.
Verisimilitude: Popper wanted to say science progresses toward truth even if we never reach certainty. He proposed verisimilitude (truth-likeness): newer theories are closer to truth than predecessors. Einstein is closer to truth than Newton (explains more, contradicts fewer observations). But Popper’s technical definition failed (shown by Tichy and Miller). He acknowledged this but maintained the intuition: science approaches truth asymptotically.
World 3 and objective knowledge: Popper distinguished three worlds. World 1: physical objects and states. World 2: mental states, consciousness. World 3: objective knowledge — theories, problems, arguments, logical relations — existing independently of anyone’s believing them. A proof is valid whether anyone has thought it or not. World 3 is created by humans (we formulate theories) but autonomous (theories have implications we haven’t deduced yet). This defends objectivity against subjectivism: knowledge isn’t justified belief (subjective) but objective content open to criticism.
Critical rationalism: Reason itself is open to criticism. We can’t justify reason foundationally (that would require reason, circularly). But we can adopt critical attitude: everything is questionable, authorities can be challenged, no belief is immune. We justify beliefs not by proving them from certain foundations but by exposing them to criticism and eliminating errors. This is comprehensive rationalism — rationality isn’t deducing from axioms but criticizing dogmatism wherever found.
Historicism critique: Historicism claims history follows discoverable laws enabling prediction of future developments. Examples: Plato (history decays from golden age), Hegel (history is Spirit’s dialectical self-realization), Marx (history progresses through class struggle to communism). Popper argues: (1) If social science exists, it can’t predict future knowledge (if we could predict discoveries, we’d have made them already). (2) Future history depends on future knowledge. (3) Therefore, we can’t predict future history. Historicism is pseudoscience — unfalsifiable, pretending certainty where none exists.
Moreover, historicism is dangerous. If history’s course is inevitable, individuals don’t matter; present suffering is justified by predicted utopia; criticism is futile opposition to historical necessity. Totalitarians (Nazis, Stalinists) used historicism to justify atrocities. The open society rejects historical inevitability, insists on human agency, values individuals over collectives.
Open versus closed society: Closed society (Plato’s Republic, totalitarian states) claims to know the good, imposes it authoritatively, silences criticism. Rulers are guardians of truth; citizens obey. Change is decay; tradition is sacred; the collective matters, individuals don’t. Open society accepts ignorance, allows competing visions of good, institutionalizes criticism (democracy, free press, markets). No one has final truth; institutions enable error-correction through feedback (elections remove bad leaders, markets signal consumer preferences, science revises theories).
Popper rejected utopianism: blueprints for perfect society impose one vision, can’t anticipate consequences, resist modification when reality diverges from plan. He advocated piecemeal social engineering: small, reversible reforms tested and modified as needed. This is scientific method applied to politics — trial and error, not grand design.
Political implications: Popper defended liberal democracy, welfare state, mixed economy. He supported social reform (healthcare, education, poverty relief) as necessary for genuine freedom — material deprivation prevents critical engagement. But he rejected central planning and Marxism. The open society requires strong institutions limiting power, protecting minorities, enabling peaceful change.
Evolutionary epistemology: Later work emphasized biological foundations of knowledge. Organisms evolve through variation, selection, retention. Knowledge grows similarly: we vary hypotheses (conjecture), select through testing (refutation), retain what survives (corroboration). Science is Darwinian — theories compete, strongest (best-tested) survive temporarily. Humans advance beyond biological evolution through exosomatic evolution — transmitting knowledge culturally, testing through language and writing, not just genes.
Metaphysics: Unlike logical positivists, Popper valued metaphysics. It’s not testable but inspires science. Atomism (metaphysical doctrine) inspired atomic physics. Determinism and indeterminism are metaphysical but shape scientific research programs. Metaphysics is legitimate if it’s criticizable and generates testable theories.
Quantum mechanics: Popper engaged with quantum mechanics, corresponding with Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg. He rejected Copenhagen interpretation (wave function collapse when observed, observer creates reality), seeing it as subjectivist. He defended realism and propensity interpretation of probability (probabilities are objective propensities, not subjective degrees of belief or frequencies).
