Born in 1401 in Kues on the Moselle River, son of Johann Krebs (Crab), a prosperous merchant and boatman. His father’s wealth funded excellent education at Heidelberg, Padua, and Cologne. He studied law at Padua, where he absorbed Italian humanism and acquired Greek, rare for Germans. By his twenties he was involved in church politics, attending the Council of Basel (1433) debating church reform and papal authority.

Initially he supported conciliarism — the view that church councils held authority over popes. But by 1437 he switched sides, defending papal supremacy in his work The Catholic Concordance. Pope Eugene IV rewarded him with diplomatic missions to Constantinople seeking reunification with Eastern Orthodox churches. These missions failed politically but exposed him to Greek manuscripts and Neoplatonic philosophy that transformed his thinking.

His masterwork De Docta Ignorantia (On Learned Ignorance) appeared in 1440, written in just three months after a mystical illumination during a sea voyage. The book argued that the infinite cannot be grasped by finite reason — we approach God through recognizing reason’s limits. This “learned ignorance” became his philosophical signature.

He rose rapidly in church hierarchy: bishop, cardinal, papal legate to Germany tasked with monastic reform. He traveled constantly, often facing resistance from monasteries unwilling to reform. He collected Greek manuscripts obsessively, building one of Europe’s finest libraries. He wrote on mathematics, astronomy, calendar reform, and theology.
