God is the coincidence of opposites — infinite maximum and minimum united. Human knowledge is learned ignorance, knowing that we cannot know.
Born in 1401 in Kues on the Moselle River, son of Johann Krebs (Crab), a prosperous merchant and boatman. His father’s wealth funded excellent education at Heidelberg, Padua, and Cologne. He studied law at Padua, where he absorbed Italian humanism and acquired Greek, rare for Germans. By his twenties he was involved in church politics, attending the Council of Basel (1433) debating church reform and papal authority.
Initially he supported conciliarism — the view that church councils held authority over popes. But by 1437 he switched sides, defending papal supremacy in his work The Catholic Concordance. Pope Eugene IV rewarded him with diplomatic missions to Constantinople seeking reunification with Eastern Orthodox churches. These missions failed politically but exposed him to Greek manuscripts and Neoplatonic philosophy that transformed his thinking.
His masterwork De Docta Ignorantia (On Learned Ignorance) appeared in 1440, written in just three months after a mystical illumination during a sea voyage. The book argued that the infinite cannot be grasped by finite reason — we approach God through recognizing reason’s limits. This “learned ignorance” became his philosophical signature.
He rose rapidly in church hierarchy: bishop, cardinal, papal legate to Germany tasked with monastic reform. He traveled constantly, often facing resistance from monasteries unwilling to reform. He collected Greek manuscripts obsessively, building one of Europe’s finest libraries. He wrote on mathematics, astronomy, calendar reform, and theology. He designed improved lenses for spectacles and measured the weight of blood.
His astronomical speculations were extraordinary. He suggested Earth moves and isn’t the center of the universe, that the stars might be suns with their own worlds, that space is infinite. He reached these conclusions not through observation but through metaphysical reasoning about God’s infinity requiring cosmic infinity. Copernicus likely read him.
He died in 1464 returning from a papal mission in Italy. His library and charitable hospital in Kues survive. He left detailed instructions for both, showing the same care for institutions as for ideas.

God is absolute maximum (contains all being) and absolute minimum (utterly simple), simultaneously everything and nothing, rest and motion, one and many.

This anticipates Copernican revolution by removing Earth's privileged position. He reached this not through observation but through theology — if God is infinite, the universe must be infinite, so no point can be its center.
Cusanus built his philosophy on one devastating insight: the infinite cannot be measured by the finite. God is infinite; human reason is finite. Therefore reason cannot comprehend God fully. All theology is approximation, all knowledge conjectural. This sounds skeptical, but Cusanus meant it mystically. By knowing that we cannot know God through concepts, we achieve “learned ignorance” — a higher knowledge that transcends discursive reason. The polygon may never equal the circle, but knowing this fact itself is wisdom.
From this epistemological base he constructed his metaphysics. God is “absolute maximum” — containing all possible being without limit. But God is also “absolute minimum” — utterly simple, without parts or divisions. How can God be both maximum and minimum simultaneously? Because in the infinite, opposites coincide. Finite things are subject to the law of non-contradiction: a thing can’t be both hot and cold, both large and small. But infinite being transcends this logic. In God, maximum and minimum are identical because God’s simplicity contains all complexity, God’s unity contains all multiplicity.
This coincidentia oppositorum revolutionized theology. It meant negative theology (saying what God isn’t) and positive theology (saying what God is) both fail and both succeed. All statements about God are simultaneously true and false when applied to infinity. We must use concepts while knowing concepts don’t capture reality. This anticipated later dialectical thinking — thesis and antithesis united in synthesis at higher level.
Cusanus extended this to cosmology. If God is infinite, the created universe must reflect divine infinity somehow. Traditional cosmology made Earth the center, surrounded by celestial spheres, with God beyond. But Cusanus argued that an infinite universe has no center — every point is equally near or far from everywhere else. Earth isn’t the center; neither is anything else. Earth moves (though he thought it wobbles rather than orbits). The stars might be suns. The universe might be infinite in extent. These conclusions weren’t empirical but theological — God’s nature determines cosmic structure.
His epistemology was equally radical. Knowledge isn’t passive reception of forms from objects (Aristotle) but active construction by mind. We don’t discover truth; we conjecture it, creating mental models that approximate reality. Better conjectures fit experience better, but all remain conjectures. Mathematics provides the best conjectures because mathematical relations are most precise. This anticipated both modern science (mathematical modeling) and Kant (mind structures experience).
Everything connected: learned ignorance, coincidence of opposites, infinite universe, conjectural knowledge, mathematical method. Together they dissolved medieval certainties while preserving religious devotion. Cusanus showed you could question everything and still believe, could use reason while transcending it, could serve the Church while revolutionizing thought. Renaissance philosophy begins here.
