Born in 1596 in La Haye en Touraine to a noble family. His mother died when he was one year old. He was sickly as a child, developing the habit of staying in bed until late morning — a practice he maintained throughout life, claiming he did his best thinking lying down. He studied at the Jesuit college of La Flèche, receiving excellent education in mathematics, philosophy, and classics. But he became disillusioned with philosophy, finding it produced only disputes, never certainty.

After graduating in 1614, he studied law at Poitiers, then joined the army of Prince Maurice of Nassau in the Dutch Republic. Not as career soldier but as gentleman volunteer pursuing military service for education and travel. In 1619, in Bavaria, he experienced three vivid dreams on the night of November 10 that convinced him his life’s mission was to establish a new method for achieving certainty in knowledge. He spent the next years travelling and thinking.

In 1628 he settled in the Dutch Republic, where he lived for twenty years in relative obscurity, moving frequently to avoid intrusions. He worked on mathematics (inventing analytic geometry), optics, physiology, and philosophy. He wrote his first major work, The World, explaining the universe through mechanical principles. But when he heard in 1633 that Galileo had been condemned for heliocentrism, Descartes suppressed his book, which also supported Copernican theory.

Instead he published Discourse on Method (1637) with three scientific appendices demonstrating his method. In 1641 he published Meditations on First Philosophy, his masterwork, with objections from leading philosophers and his replies. He published Principles of Philosophy (1644), attempting a complete system. His works sparked intense controversy. Dutch Protestant theologians attacked his philosophy. Catholics eventually placed his works on the Index. He defended himself carefully but continued publishing.

In 1649, Queen Christina of Sweden invited him to Stockholm to tutor her and establish a scientific academy. Despite misgivings about the climate, he accepted. The Queen insisted on 5am tutorials in her cold library. The harsh conditions broke his health. He caught pneumonia and died in February 1650, aged fifty-three, his philosophical revolution incomplete but unstoppable.

One morning in 1619, while stationed in Bavaria, Descartes stayed late in bed (as usual) when he noticed a fly walking across the ceiling. Watching its path, he realized he could specify the fly's position at any moment using just two numbers — its distances from two perpendicular walls. This insight led to his invention of coordinate geometry, the coordinate plane, and the entire field of analytic geometry. The "Cartesian coordinates" we still use derive from watching that fly. The anecdote (possibly apocryphal but widely told) captures how major discoveries can arise from idle observation and how Descartes's mathematical and philosophical minds worked together — finding abstract systematic principles underlying concrete phenomena.
Descartes doubted everything and remained a skeptic. Actually, his doubt was methodological — a tool for finding certainty, not an end in itself. Once he established "I think, therefore I am," he rebuilt knowledge systematically, proving God's existence, the external world, and mathematical truth. The doubt was temporary, the certainty permanent.

Yet his method of systematic doubt and his mechanical physics undermined scholastic theology so thoroughly that both Jesuits and Protestants attacked him. His mind-body dualism seemed to make God unnecessary for explaining the physical world, which operated by mechanical laws. His emphasis on individual reason over authority threatened Church teaching. His reduction of animals to unconscious machines horrified those who saw divine purpose in nature. When his works were condemned at Dutch universities and placed on the Catholic Index, he protested that he'd been misunderstood — he was defending faith, not attacking it. But the tension was real: his method started from individual consciousness (cogito), not divine revelation; his physics explained nature without final causes or divine intervention; his epistemology made reason judge of truth, not Scripture or tradition. He tried synthesizing new science with old faith, but the synthesis was unstable. The mechanical worldview he helped create eventually secularized nature completely, exactly what he claimed to prevent. He broke the container by making philosophy begin from the thinking subject rather than God or being, and by separating mind (known through introspection) from matter (known through mathematics). After Descartes, philosophy's terrain was divided into problems he created: mind-body problem, problem of other minds, external world skepticism, foundation of knowledge.

Descartes says: tear down the entire house to bedrock, then rebuild from solid foundation using only materials you've personally inspected for quality. Descartes’s philosophy begins with one radical move: doubt everything until you reach absolute certainty. Not casual doubt but systematic, hyperbolic doubt. Can you doubt that you’re reading this? Yes — you might be dreaming. Can you doubt mathematics? Yes — an evil demon might deceive you about even simple arithmetic. Strip away everything uncertain until you reach bedrock. What remains? The cogito: I think, therefore I am. You cannot doubt you’re thinking because doubting is itself thinking. The very act of doubt proves the doubter exists. This is certain, indubitable, the foundation for rebuilding knowledge.

From this foundation he reconstructed the world. First, what am I? A thinking thing — mind, consciousness, awareness. This is known immediately through introspection. Body is doubtful still. Second, does God exist? Yes, through three proofs. The ontological argument: God’s essence includes existence, so God necessarily exists. The causal argument: I have an idea of infinite perfection; only an actually infinite being could cause this idea; therefore God exists. The trademark argument: God stamped the idea of infinity in my mind like a craftsman’s mark. Third, can we trust reason? Yes, because God is perfect and wouldn’t deceive us systematically. Clear and distinct ideas are true because God guarantees them.

This establishes mathematics and geometry as certain. But what about the external world? Here Descartes argues that God created us with strong natural inclination to believe in external objects corresponding to our perceptions. Since God isn’t a deceiver, this inclination must be reliable. Physical objects exist, though they’re not exactly as they appear. Colors, sounds, tastes are merely sensations in us. But extension, shape, size, and motion are real properties of matter.

This leads to his dualism. Mind and matter are radically different substances. Mind is thinking, unextended, indivisible, known through introspection. Matter is extended, unthinking, divisible, known through mathematics. Humans are unions of these opposed substances. The body is a machine operating by mechanical laws. Animals are unconscious automata. Only humans have souls. The mind interacts with body through the pineal gland (he guessed), though how two completely different substances interact remained unexplained — the mind-body problem he bequeathed to philosophy.

His physics was completely mechanical. Nature operates like clockwork — particles in motion governed by mathematical laws. No purposes, no forms, no qualities. Just matter, motion, and geometry. This mechanization of nature was revolutionary. Combined with his epistemology — knowledge begins from consciousness, not sensation or divine revelation — it established modern philosophy’s agenda: How do we know the external world exists? How do mind and body interact? How can we be certain of anything?

His method was mathematical — start with self-evident axioms, deduce conclusions with geometric rigor. Philosophy should achieve certainty like mathematics. This rationalist confidence that reason alone could discover truth shaped continental philosophy for two centuries. But British empiricists attacked his innate ideas and deductive method, arguing that experience, not reason, grounds knowledge. Kant later tried synthesizing these opposed traditions.

Descartes created modern philosophy's terrain. The mind-body problem, epistemological skepticism, foundationalism, the subjective turn — all stem from him. Continental rationalism (Spinoza, Leibniz) developed his method and metaphysics. British empiricism (Locke, Berkeley, Hume) attacked his rationalism while accepting his problems. Kant synthesized both traditions. Husserl phenomenology returned to consciousness as starting point. Existentialism began from the cogito's lonely subject. If brain states are just physical processes, how do they generate subjective consciousness? This "hard problem" is Descartes's legacy.
