Everything contains a portion of everything else — infinite seeds (spermata) mix infinitely, and cosmic Mind (Nous) initiated rotation separating them, creating apparent generation through rearrangement of pre-existing elements.
Anaxagoras was born around 500 BCE in Clazomenae, an Ionian Greek city on Asia Minor’s coast (near modern Izmir, Turkey). His family was wealthy and prominent, but Anaxagoras showed little interest in commerce or politics, devoting himself to philosophy and science. Ancient sources report he gave away his inheritance, saying wealth distracted from contemplation. When asked if he cared about his homeland, he pointed to sky: “My homeland is up there.”
Around 480 BCE, age 20, he moved to Athens — unprecedented for philosopher. Previously, philosophy flourished in Ionia, Sicily, and southern Italy, but Athens was primarily known for drama, democracy, and military power. Anaxagoras brought natural philosophy to Athens, establishing it as intellectual center for next two centuries.
He arrived during Athens’s transformation into empire. The Persian Wars had just ended (Marathon 490 BCE, Salamis 480 BCE). Athens was rebuilding, entering golden age under Pericles. Anaxagoras became close friend and intellectual advisor to Pericles, tutoring him in natural philosophy and astronomy. Their friendship lasted decades. Pericles’s rationalism, measured rhetoric, and scientific outlook reportedly came from Anaxagoras’s influence.
Anaxagoras spent approximately thirty years in Athens (480-450 BCE), teaching and investigating nature. He explained phenomena rationally, without gods: Solar eclipses occur when moon blocks sun. Moon shines by reflecting sunlight (revolutionary insight). Milky Way is massed stars. Meteors are stones falling from sky. He collected meteorite fragments as evidence. The sun is red-hot stone larger than Peloponnese (scandalous claim — Helios was god). Moon is earthlike, possibly inhabited. Rainbow is sunlight reflecting in clouds.
He studied biology, proposing materialist theories of sensation, nutrition, reproduction. He investigated embryology, astronomy, meteorology, geology. Everything had natural causes — no divine intervention needed.
This rationalism provoked opposition. Around 450 BCE (dates uncertain), he was prosecuted for impiety (asebeia). Charges: claiming sun is stone and moon is earth (denying their divinity), introducing foreign gods or denying traditional gods. The prosecution was likely political — attacking Pericles through his teacher. Athens’s democratic assembly was controlled by conservative faction opposing Pericles’s radical democracy and imperialist policies. Unable to prosecute Pericles directly (too powerful), they targeted his associates: Anaxagoras (impiety), Aspasia (Pericles’s companion, also charged), Phidias (sculptor, charged with theft).
Pericles defended Anaxagoras passionately, allegedly weeping in court. Sources differ on outcome. Some say Anaxagoras was acquitted but left Athens voluntarily. Others say he was convicted, fined, and exiled. Either way, he departed Athens around 450 BCE, settling in Lampsacus (city on Hellespont controlling grain trade to Athens — ironic refuge).
In Lampsacus, he founded philosophical school, continued teaching, and was honored. When magistrates asked what honors he desired, he requested annual holiday for children on his death anniversary. They agreed, celebrating the festival for centuries after his death — testament to his pedagogical legacy.
He died around 428 BCE at approximately 72. When asked late in life if he regretted exile from Athens, he replied: “The road to Hades is the same from everywhere” — showing philosophical equanimity. When asked what made life worthwhile, he said: “Investigating the sun, moon, and heavens” — pure intellectual curiosity motivated him.
His impact on Athens outlasted his presence. Socrates knew his teachings (though criticized Mind’s limited role). Plato engaged his philosophy extensively. Aristotle devoted Physics sections to refuting and refining his theories. His prosecution for impiety prefigured Socrates’s trial (399 BCE) — both convicted for questioning traditional gods and introducing new cosmic principles.

Anaxagoras solved Parmenides’s problem through infinite qualitative pluralism and cosmic Mind.
Everything in everything: His radical principle: every substance contains portions of all other substances in infinitesimal amounts. Gold contains flesh, bone, water, fire. Flesh contains gold, earth, air. Nothing is pure. Why? Because generation requires pre-existing elements. If bread becomes flesh when eaten, flesh must have been present in bread (otherwise it arises from non-being, violating Parmenides). Similarly, all transformations are separations and recombinations of pre-existing elements.
This explains: How bread nourishes — flesh-portions in bread join flesh in body. How hair grows — hair-portions in food join hair. How white becomes black — black was already present, just dominated.
Infinite divisibility: Unlike atoms (smallest indivisible units), seeds are infinitely divisible. Each part, however small, contains portions of everything. Cut flesh infinitely — each piece still contains gold, water, air. There’s no bottom level of pure substance.
Why? Because if division reached pure substance, transformation would require that substance arising from nothing (violating Parmenides). Infinite divisibility ensures everything always contains everything.
Predominance principle: Things appear as what predominates in mixture. Flesh appears fleshy because flesh-portions dominate (though gold, bone, hair portions exist). Gold appears golden because gold predominates. Different ratios create apparent variety from universal mixture.
Mind (Nous): Infinite material mixture alone can’t explain cosmic order. Anaxagoras introduces Mind: unmixed (contains no portions of other substances, uniquely pure), infinite, controlling all, knowing all. Mind initiated cosmic rotation separating the original uniform mixture into distinct regions. As rotation continues, substances separate progressively: heavy to center (earth), medium around (water, air), light outward (fire, aether). This vortex mechanism creates cosmos mechanically, but Mind initiated it purposefully.
Critical question: Does Mind continue governing, or only initiate? Fragments suggest both: Mind knows all, controls all (ongoing), but cosmology proceeds mechanically (rotation does work). This ambiguity frustrated Plato and Aristotle. They wanted teleological explanation — Mind ordering cosmos for good. Instead, Anaxagoras offered mechanical process after intelligent initiation.
Cosmology: Original state — all things blended uniformly. Mind initiated rotation at one point. Rotation spread, creating vortex separating substances. Dense substances (earth, stone) move to center, forming earth. Lighter substances (water, air) surround. Lightest (fire, aether) move outward, forming celestial bodies. Celestial bodies are stones carried by rotation. Sun is red-hot stone, moon is earth reflecting sunlight. Meteorites prove this — they’re fragments thrown off by rotation.
Biology: Animals form through mixture mechanisms. Hot and moist substances combining create life. Semen contains all parts in miniature (proto-preformation theory). Nutrition works through assimilation: like joins like (flesh-portions in food join flesh in body). Sensation works through contrasts: we perceive hot through cold in sense organ, light through darkness.
Response to Parmenides: Anaxagoras accepts Parmenides’s core insight: being cannot arise from non-being. But he argues: Parmenides’s Being isn’t absolutely one — it’s infinite qualitatively distinct substances. Change isn’t being arising from non-being but substances rearranging. Generation is just mixing; destruction is separating. Nothing truly comes to be or perishes; substances only combine and dissolve.
This preserved Parmenides’s logic while explaining appearances. But it required infinite divisibility and universal interpenetration — radical price.
Influence on Plato: Plato admired Anaxagoras’s Mind but criticized its limited role. In Phaedo, Socrates recounts youthful enthusiasm for Anaxagoras: “I heard someone reading from a book of Anaxagoras, and saying that Mind orders and is the cause of everything. I was delighted… I thought he would explain how this was for the best.” But disappointment followed: “As I went on reading, I saw the man using Mind not at all, but air and aether and water to explain things.” Socrates wanted purposeful explanation; Anaxagoras offered mechanical process.
Yet Plato developed World Soul and Demiurge in Timaeus partly from Anaxagoras’s Mind — cosmic intelligence ordering chaos. He corrected Anaxagoras by making Mind fully teleological.
Aristotle’s critique: Aristotle praised Anaxagoras for introducing Mind but criticized execution. Mind appears deus ex machina — invoked when mechanism fails, otherwise ignored. Aristotle developed Unmoved Mover and final causation systematically, completing Anaxagoras’s project.
Aristotle also questioned “everything in everything”: Does flesh really contain infinite variety? How do substances maintain identity if infinitely interpenetrated? He proposed limited elements (four) with definite natures instead.
