Henri-Louis Bergson was born in Paris on 18 October 1859, the year Darwin published Origin of Species. His father, Michał Bergson, was a Polish-Jewish musician and composer who had settled in Paris; his mother, Katherine Levison, was English-Irish Jewish. The family was cultured, musical, multilingual. Henri was the second of seven children. His early years coincided with the Second Empire’s collapse and the Third Republic’s birth — Paris was Europe’s cultural capital, buzzing with scientific and artistic innovation.

He attended the Lycée Fontanes (later Lycée Condorcet), one of Paris’s elite schools. He excelled at everything but particularly mathematics. At eighteen, he solved a mathematical problem and published the solution in the Annales de Mathématiques, earning recognition. He seemed destined for mathematics or physics. But philosophy gripped him.

In 1878, he entered the École Normale Supérieure, training ground for France’s intellectual elite. He studied philosophy, graduated in 1881, and began teaching at lycées in Angers, then Clermont-Ferrand. These provincial years (1881-88) were crucial. He read extensively, thought deeply, and began developing his philosophy. In 1889, he submitted two dissertations for his doctorate: one in Latin on Aristotle (required), one in French titled Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience (Time and Free Will). Time and Free Will attacked mechanistic determinism by distinguishing two kinds of multiplicity: quantitative (things in space, counted) and qualitative (states of consciousness, interpenetrating). When we measure time with clocks, we spatialize it, treating moments as discrete units. But lived time — duration (durée) — is continuous flow where past pervades present. From 1889 to 1897, he taught at lycées in Paris while working on his next book. In 1896, Matière et mémoire (Matter and Memory) appeared — a profound analysis of perception, memory, and mind-body relations. Bergson argued that perception is pragmatic: we perceive what’s useful for action, not reality fully. In 1907, he published L’Évolution créatrice (Creative Evolution), his most influential work. Bergson applied his philosophy to biology and evolution. Darwin explained adaptation and survival but not creativity — why does life produce novelty, complexity, consciousness? Bergson proposed élan vital (vital impulse), a creative force driving evolution not toward predetermined goals but producing unpredictable forms. Evolution is creative, not mechanical. The book was a sensation. It was translated immediately into English, German, Italian. It influenced literature, art (Cubism, Futurism), theology (Teilhard de Chardin), and popular culture. He was elected to the Académie Française (1914), received honorary doctorates, met political leaders and artists.

But criticism mounted. Scientists attacked élan vital as mysticism dressed as biology — it explained nothing, predicted nothing. Bertrand Russell, in a famous critique, dismissed Bergson’s metaphysics as confused, his intuition as anti-intellectual. Julien Benda in La Trahison des Clercs attacked Bergson (among others) for abandoning reason for intuition, paving the way for irrationalism.

World War I changed everything. Bergson, previously focused on philosophy, became engaged in politics and diplomacy. He undertook missions for the French government, working to bring America into the war (meeting President Wilson) and supporting the League of Nations. In 1922, he became president of the League’s International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (precursor to UNESCO).

His final major work, Les Deux Sources de la moralité et de la religion (The Two Sources of Morality and Religion), appeared in 1932. Bergson distinguished closed morality (tribal, rule-based, enforced by social pressure) from open morality (creative, universal, inspired by moral heroes and mystics). Closed religion is static (ritual, myth, social cohesion); open religion is dynamic (mysticism, direct contact with creative force).
