Death Circumstances

Born in 1561 at York House in London, son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, then Gray’s Inn for law. At sixteen he travelled to France as part of the English ambassador’s staff, returning at eighteen when his father died suddenly, leaving him little inheritance. This financial pressure shaped his career — he sought wealth and position through law and politics.

He entered Parliament in 1581 and began a long career as lawyer and courtier. He cultivated Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who became his patron. But when Essex led a failed rebellion in 1601, Bacon helped prosecute him, contributing to Essex’s execution. This betrayal earned Bacon wealth and advancement but lasting infamy. Under James I, Bacon rose rapidly: knighted in 1603, Attorney General in 1613, Lord Keeper in 1617, Lord Chancellor in 1618. He was created Baron Verulam in 1618 and Viscount St. Alban in 1621.

At the peak of his power, he fell catastrophically. Parliament charged him with accepting bribes from litigants. He confessed, claiming the bribes never influenced his judgments and that accepting gifts was customary. The King fined him £40,000 (never collected) and briefly imprisoned him in the Tower. He was banished from court and prohibited from holding office. He spent his final five years in retirement, writing.

Throughout his political career, he pursued his grand philosophical project: reforming all knowledge. His Novum Organum (1620) outlined his new method — systematic observation and inductive reasoning replacing Aristotelian deduction from first principles. His New Atlantis (1627, posthumous) imagined an ideal society governed by scientific research institution. His Essays (1597-1625, continually expanded) showed his literary skill and practical wisdom. His classification of knowledge shaped university curricula for centuries.

During his trial for bribery, Bacon made no real defense, admitting he'd accepted gifts from litigants. In his Essays he'd written that taking gifts without being influenced requires rare virtue, but refusing gifts while judging fairly is easy virtue any coward can manage. He claimed the rare virtue. Whether true is questionable, but the distinction is clever. It captures Bacon's character: intellectually brilliant, morally questionable, always distinguishing what others conflate. He could rationalize his compromises while genuinely believing in his philosophical mission. The man who would remake human knowledge couldn't resist conventional corruption.
Bacon invented the scientific method. Actually, he systematized and advocated for experimental method but didn't invent it. Medieval scholars like Roger Bacon and Robert Grosseteste practiced experimental investigation. Bacon's contribution was articulating the method philosophically and advocating its systematic application to all knowledge. He provided the manifesto, not the invention.
