Born in 1561 at York House in London, son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, then Gray’s Inn for law. At sixteen he travelled to France as part of the English ambassador’s staff, returning at eighteen when his father died suddenly, leaving him little inheritance. This financial pressure shaped his career — he sought wealth and position through law and politics.
He entered Parliament in 1581 and began a long career as lawyer and courtier. He cultivated Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who became his patron. But when Essex led a failed rebellion in 1601, Bacon helped prosecute him, contributing to Essex’s execution. This betrayal earned Bacon wealth and advancement but lasting infamy. Under James I, Bacon rose rapidly: knighted in 1603, Attorney General in 1613, Lord Keeper in 1617, Lord Chancellor in 1618. He was created Baron Verulam in 1618 and Viscount St. Alban in 1621.
At the peak of his power, he fell catastrophically. Parliament charged him with accepting bribes from litigants. He confessed, claiming the bribes never influenced his judgments and that accepting gifts was customary. The King fined him £40,000 (never collected) and briefly imprisoned him in the Tower. He was banished from court and prohibited from holding office. He spent his final five years in retirement, writing.
Throughout his political career, he pursued his grand philosophical project: reforming all knowledge. His Novum Organum (1620) outlined his new method — systematic observation and inductive reasoning replacing Aristotelian deduction from first principles. His New Atlantis (1627, posthumous) imagined an ideal society governed by scientific research institution. His Essays (1597-1625, continually expanded) showed his literary skill and practical wisdom. His classification of knowledge shaped university curricula for centuries.
He died in 1626 from pneumonia caught while conducting an experiment. Characteristically, his last thoughts were about whether the experiment succeeded. It did — freezing preserves meat — though the knowledge cost him his life.

Bacon’s philosophy begins with devastating critique: Aristotelian natural philosophy has produced no useful results in two thousand years. Scholastics endlessly debate Aristotle’s texts while nature remains unconquered. Why? Because the method is wrong. Aristotle starts with first principles (essences, causes, forms) and deduces downward to particular facts. This “anticipation of nature” imposes human concepts on reality. Bacon proposed the opposite: start with particular observations, build up gradually through careful induction to general principles. This “interpretation of nature” lets nature reveal itself rather than forcing it into preconceived categories.
The Novum Organum outlined this new method systematically. First, identify and eliminate the “Idols of the Mind” — systematic errors that distort understanding. The Idols of the Tribe are human nature’s limitations — we see patterns where none exist, prefer confirming evidence, and trust our senses too much. The Idols of the Cave are individual biases from temperament, education, and experience. The Idols of the Marketplace arise from language’s imprecision — words are socially constructed, often obscuring rather than revealing reality. The Idols of the Theatre are inherited philosophical systems that trap us in false frameworks. We must recognize these distortions before proceeding.
Then comes methodical observation. Don’t just collect random facts — design experiments that force nature to reveal patterns. Vary conditions systematically. Record results precisely. Build tables showing when phenomena occur, when they don’t, and in what degrees. From these tables, cautiously induce general principles. Don’t leap to grand theories — build gradually from narrower principles to broader ones. Test each level before ascending. This patient empiricism would take generations but would produce certain knowledge of natural laws.
Knowledge’s purpose isn’t contemplation but utility. “Knowledge is power” meant science should improve human life materially. Cure diseases, extend lifespans, increase food production, improve technology. The New Atlantis imagined society organized around “Salomon’s House,” where scientists work systematically on projects benefiting humanity — breeding better crops, investigating medicines, studying weather, developing materials. This vision inspired the Royal Society and modern research institutions. Science isn’t for individual genius but collective, organized investigation directed at practical problems.
Bacon carefully separated scientific and theological domains. Nature reveals God’s power and wisdom but not His will or purposes. Science studies how things operate (efficient causes), not why they exist (final causes). Theology addresses salvation and morality, revealed through Scripture. Each domain has proper methods and limits. Science shouldn’t speculate about God; theology shouldn’t dictate natural philosophy. This separation protected science from religious interference while protecting faith from scientific challenge. Both could proceed in parallel without conflict.
His politics reflected his epistemology. Knowledge should be organized institutionally, funded by state, directed toward public benefit. The New Atlantis’s government defers to scientists on technical matters. This anticipated modern technocracy — governance informed by expertise. But Bacon never questioned monarchy or hierarchy. His vision was progress through order, not revolution. Reform knowledge, maintain social structure. His science was radical but his politics conservative. The tension never resolved because he died before implications became clear.
