Born in 1646 in Leipzig to an academic family. His father, a philosophy professor, died when Leibniz was six, leaving him a large library where he taught himself Latin, Greek, and scholastic philosophy. Prodigy who entered university at fourteen, completed bachelor’s degree at sixteen, doctorate at twenty. His dissertation on legal philosophy was so advanced that the University of Leipzig refused to grant him a doctorate (possibly due to his youth), so he obtained it from Altdorf instead.
Rather than pursuing academic career, he entered diplomatic service. In 1672 he went to Paris on diplomatic mission and stayed four years. There he met Huygens, who introduced him to mathematics. He invented calculus during this period — the differential and integral calculus, independently of Newton. His notation (dx, dy, ∫) became standard. He invented a calculating machine superior to Pascal’s. He was elected to the Royal Society in London.
In 1676 he entered service of Duke of Brunswick in Hanover as librarian and court councillor. He’d remain there forty years. His position required researching Brunswick family history to support their dynastic claims. This took him to archives across Europe, allowing him to meet intellectuals and conduct philosophy alongside historical research. He also worked as mining engineer, designing pumps and windmills to drain water from silver mines.
He corresponded prolifically — with Spinoza, Arnauld, Clarke (defending Newton), Princess Sophie Charlotte, and hundreds of others. He published relatively little in his lifetime. Most of his philosophy exists in letters and manuscripts. His major public works were Theodicy (1710), defending God’s goodness despite evil, and Monadology (1714), his compact metaphysical system.
When his employer, Elector Georg Ludwig, became King George I of Britain in 1714, Leibniz hoped to join the court in London. But George, annoyed by Leibniz’s incomplete family history and his disputes with Newton, left him in Hanover. Leibniz spent his final years isolated, working frantically on multiple projects, trying to complete his Brunswick history. He died in 1716, largely forgotten. Only his secretary attended his funeral. No memorial was erected. Yet his manuscripts, published gradually over two centuries, revealed one of history’s most original minds.

Leibniz built his philosophy from two principles: the principle of contradiction (A cannot be both true and false) and the principle of sufficient reason (nothing happens without a reason why it is so rather than otherwise). From these he derived his entire system through rigorous logical deduction. Every truth is either necessary (its denial is self-contradictory) or contingent (true but could be otherwise). Necessary truths rest on the principle of contradiction. Contingent truths rest on the principle of sufficient reason.
His metaphysics begins with the concept of substance. Following Aristotle, substance is that which exists in itself and needs nothing else for its existence. But Leibniz made substance more rigorous. True substance must be simple (indivisible, no parts), self-sufficient (containing principle of its actions within itself), and indestructible (can’t be created or destroyed naturally). Matter doesn’t qualify — it’s divisible and passive. Only spiritual entities qualify. These he called monads.
Monads are infinite in number, each a simple substance containing representations of the entire universe from its unique perspective. They differ in clarity of perception. God perceives everything clearly. Human souls perceive much clearly. Animal souls perceive less clearly. Lower monads perceive dimly, unconsciously. Each monad unfolds according to internal principle like a seed developing into tree. All its future states are contained in its concept.
Here’s the radical part: monads don’t interact. They have “no windows” through which anything enters or leaves. Each develops independently according to its own nature. Yet they appear to interact — my desire to raise my arm seems to cause my arm to rise. How? Pre-established harmony. God created monads so their internal developments synchronize perfectly. Like perfectly synchronized clocks that seem to influence each other but actually run independently. God is the master clockmaker who wound all clocks at creation to run in harmony.
This solved the mind-body problem elegantly. Mind and body are separate substances (monads) that don’t interact but run parallel, synchronized by God. When I decide to raise my arm, my mental monad and my body’s dominant monad both unfold states in harmony. No mysterious interaction required. But it made causation merely appearance. Things don’t really cause each other; they just appear to because of pre-established correspondence.
His theodicy defended God against the problem of evil. If God is omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly good, why does evil exist? Leibniz’s answer: God considered infinite possible worlds and chose the best. This world contains evil because removing it would require changes making the overall world worse. Every evil serves greater good. Even the damned’s suffering is necessary for the best overall world. This optimism struck later thinkers as callous. Voltaire’s Candide savagely satirized it. But Leibniz wasn’t being naive — he was following logical necessity from God’s perfection.
His epistemology defended innate ideas against Locke. The mind isn’t blank slate but contains innate principles and tendencies. These aren’t conscious ideas but dispositions to form ideas. Like a veined marble block contains statue-shapes in its structure, the mind contains truth-structures in its nature. Experience doesn’t write on blank slate but awakens what’s already there potentially.
His logic was revolutionary. He envisioned a universal characteristic — a symbolic language in which all concepts could be expressed precisely and all reasoning reduced to calculation. Philosophical disputes would be settled by saying “Let us calculate!” This dream anticipated modern formal logic. His development of infinitesimal calculus wasn’t just mathematics but philosophical — showing how continuous change could be understood through infinitely small differences.
His physics contradicted Newton’s. Newton’s absolute space and time were independent containers in which things move. Leibniz argued space and time are relational — orders of coexistence and succession, not independent substances. Modern relativity theory vindicated Leibnizian relationalism over Newtonian absolutism. He also criticized Newton’s gravity as action at a distance without mechanism, preferring explanations through contact and mechanical causes.
Everything connected in his system: monads mirror the universe, God harmonizes all perspectives, this is the best possible world, evil serves good, truths are logically necessary or follow sufficient reason. The system’s logical elegance is breathtaking. Its plausibility is another question.
